Speedometer Help
My 83 944 has the old style speedo with cable drive. I noticed on the electrical drawings that there is an electrical connection between the speedometer and the tach. My guess is a speed pulse to the tach. However on my car the only electrical connections are 2 lights and a ground. There is one opening in the speedometer that looks like a light should be there that is empty. Anybody know if the early cars should have a connection and what it is.
I did find a "T" shaped piece under the speedometer that had a resister, transistor, and what appeared to be a film capacitor. The piece looked like it had two mounting holes and one large bushed hole. There were 3 wires going from this to the harness. Any ideas?

Just a guess here --
IIRC, one of the gauges does have a tiny circuit board on the back of it. And I do think I recall something connecting the speedo and tach . . . it might have to do with the upshift light (84 and up, I think), or the MPG gauge?????
I dunno - food for thought...

OK.. The small PC board was used for something else (MPG guage IIRC) If it's broken it shouldnt affect anything but that if your car is so equipped.
The early speedo is mechanical, cable driven from the front hub.
The 924S has the exact same setup, but no MPG guage and the PC board is still present. It does have 2 leads connected to something, but I dont know it's real purpose in my situation.
Hope this helps. If more info about this thing exists someone else should chime in.
Dal?

I took PC board thingy off today while fixing my broken odo (For the 3rd fricken time!) so I could put the tach in the center and speedo on the right. I haven't noticed any negative effects, yet. MPG gauge still moves.

Am not familiar with the early version so I might be very wrong.
From the good old VW days i remember a small block attached to the back of the spedo with some wires coming from it, one of them being green.
This block was the zener barrier that limited the electrical power delivered to the fuel level sender in the tank.
This is required to prevent sparking inside the fuel tank when things go wrong inthere.
You might want to double check on this.
