Angry Yet another hatch pin question

My rattling hatch is still a problem. Today's question is about pin adjustment.

I've read that the pins need to be adjusted so that the receivers catch the top flat part of the pin...fine. Should I be adjusting the pins by first getting to a point where they DON'T lock into the receiver, then back them off until they JUST catch, or would that lead to premature hatch opening (hate when that happens)?

At this point, I'm not slamming the hatch closed. What I do is close it till the pins make contact with the receivers, then with both hands, gently push the hatch closed, hearing the receivers "snap" into place.

Obsessed...yeah, I am!

You want the pins to be as short as they can, and still have the hatch close.
