Default 1991 944 S2 - What is this metal tube behind my dash?

Removed the dash in my '91 S2 Cab today and found this metal tube to the left of the steering column. Looks to have been hacked off. Anyone know what it's supposed to do?

Hard to see. If that spans the whole width of the car I’d guess it’s structural and/or crash protection?
