Steering wheel shake
Recent purchase on a 924S. My steering wheel shakes intermittently? Any suggestions on trouble shooting ? Thanks
PS, original gear shift handle is not there and after market improperly installed , bad rattling from there. , also engine mounts how to determine if bad ? ? What's a good manual to buy for these cars??
Hello and thanks in advance ..

Check the inside lips of the front wheels for bends. And look at a FAQ and post separate threads for your other questions. Engine mounts is a FAQ, vibration at idle that smooths out at higher RPM.

Check
I'll check the tires and balance. The rims are not original, I'm sure they are older but they look on good condition, shaking seems random. Tracks straight and feels tight. .

When you say "intermittently", do you mean at some speeds, or only sometimes (even at the same speed)?
Might the later point to worn ball joints?

Possible culprits:
Wheel bearings (worn or not fully tightened)
Ball joints
Wheels/Tires out of balance
Worn control arm bushings (crossmember or caster mount)
Tie Rods (inner or outer)
Play in steering intermediate shaft
Play inside rack and pinion
Lift one wheel off the ground and gently wiggle it left and right, up and down (9 to 3 position, 12 to 6 position). If there is play (even just a little can cause shaking) it would indicate an issue with one of the above components. Play in the 3 - 9 position could be tie rods/wheel bearings. Play in the 12-6 direction could be ball joints or wheel bearing. If you have play, even a little, you should get it addressed promptly as there are numerous safety concerns at play.
If there is no play then it would indicate an issue with wheel/tire balance or your rack and pinion or intermediate/steering shaft.
