The rule of thumb is to buy the latest off the production line. Both are good motors, but the 86 is slightly better (better cam, higher volume oil pump, better balance shaft support, etc.)

The 83 did come with forged connecting rods, but they may be long gone by now.

Is it true that it has a better cam and a larger volume oil pump????...

You can make everything work if you have enough time and money.

Default Engine

You might want to search this topic in the forum. Much has been written about cam comparisons 😀
