1) Sort of nearby? It was several hours drive :P

2) I think like $3k all in? But this was loads of other ancillary machine work (cleaning/magnaflux/balancing/weld repairs/line hone/rod big ends, and so on), as well plus a set of mains and an extraneous set of rod bearings.

3) Maybe 9 months? pushing 4k mi at the moment. I like to hope that if it was gonna fail, it would've done so already!

Ah! I thought you meant sort-of successful. That's why I was asking more questions. You meant sort-of nearby.

FWIW, my 996 motor was recently done and We did Nikasil , LN Engineering did the work. I know they do more than 911 and I would bet that all the shops that can actually do Nikasil correctly know each other.. https://www.cp-carrillo.com/ makes pistons and rings that work with the Nikasil coating. I would be surprised if they didn't have them on the shelf.. Lot of 944's still buzzing around in Southern California..

A 1987 n/a. 5 speed
I know it's just a n/a, and I'm not trying to build a racer of it. Just get it somewhat back to its former glory. The thing is that it was likely parked about 25 years ago because of the broken piston ring, and except for the sun faded India red paint, it's like a time capsule.

Can you post a photo of the pitting? The ring might have broken when the piston was removed, it'd be very unusual for one to break in operation. And a broken ring is likely to score the bore pretty significantly.
If you've ever torn down an old turbo motor or a dirt bike you learn that they run pretty well with some scary-looking bores.

It seems that LN Engineering does alot of Nikasil, including their own 911 cylinders. According to their website, they use Millennium Technologies for their Nikasil plating. I'm not current with pricing from either outfit, but it's worth a call or email to both.

If you go the Nikasil route, be aware that there's always a bit of crud throughout the block that needs cleaning, expecially the main oil galley.

Has anyone found a replacement or alternative to the crank girdle locating bushing? #928-101-195-00.
Appears to be about 15mmx 25mm. Unfortunately Mcmasters/Carr doesn't seem to have that size.
