My car is making a weird clunk noise that sometimes stops the car from turning over. It still starts but it amost always makes this noise in the process. It sounds terrible. But i have no idea what it is.

Where is the noise coming from?
Did it just start doing that, or what?
Does it vibrate the whole car?

Check to see if one of the starter bolts has backed out. Starter could be physically moving and hitting the bellhousing.

it did just start doing it a little while ago, but its gotten more and more frequent. its not a vibrating thing really, it just makes a horrible clunk. i'll check the starter.

My car has done that for 10 years. It is in the receipt record. A customer complained that they heard a clunking noise when trying to start the car, so the starter was replaced. When my friend had the car, it always did it for him. And when I bought the car from him, I replaced the starter again with a spare. Still does it. 3 starters, 10 years, looks like I will have to learn to live with it.

Check your ground cable and your Positive cable for corrosion/cracking. Most likely the starter isn't getting full current and it gets kicked back when one cylinder starts to fire. I'll bet that your power or ground cables are corroded. If you really want to check put an ohm meter on the cable (disconnected, of course. I'll be that the resistance reading is really high!
