Holy crap, what a POS. How can you even sell that thing? So basically, nearly all of the wiring is screwed up in the whole car, BUT the cd player works great!!! This car needs to be put in a crusher so no one gets killed in the thing...Especially with the turbo engine. Bad news is in this future owners future.

I like this part:

The first thing I noticed was that the front of the car was non-turbo 944 and the rear was 944 turbo. Sure enough on further inspection I found that this was actually two cars welded together at the fire wall.

He went further than the firewall or he swapped VIN plates.

No severe problems (major accidents, fire, flood damage, major odometer problems or lemon history) were ever reported by a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for this 1988 PORSCHE 944 S (WP0AA0949JN450144).

I can't believe anyone would think this story is legit, it is too far fetched to be credible. For someone with that much (claimed) mechanical experience with Porsches to know this little about the car it HAS to be a scam.
COME ON!
*He found that the car had been welded together at the firewall because it had an NA front and a turbo rear???
-BS! How many NA's on this board have the turbo rear wing? The structure ahead of the firewall can be cut off and replaced, body shops do this all the time (I wouldn't want it on my car, but it's not uncommon). I don't think for a minute that the front with the firewall was replaced, it's more work than it's worth and getting the halves aligned would be a B!+ch.
*"S" suspension...Longer control arms.
-BS again, an '88 is late offset and has the same length control arms weather it's an NA, an S or a turbo.
*All the wiring issues.
-Well, cutting it off behind the firewall would explain this, but then so would a turbo swap into an NA with a cobbled together electrical system. The boost gauge would work fine it there were a wire to it but if he just slapped a turbo cluster into an NA it might not work unless it were hooked up.
-Note the NA VIN!

I wonder if it has the front springs of an NA and the torsion bars of a turbo, that might have some interesting handling issues. Maybe it's 1/3 NA, 1/3 951 and 1/3 S, or maybe not. Here's a story that's easier to believe; some guy took some pictures of an NA from another auction or site, made up a **** and bull story so that his fake auction could go quickly for a modest price and the buyer will pay up quickly, anxious to inspect his "diamond in the rough"/bargain. He'll never see it. Maybe it's not the most plausible theory...but neither is the one on the listing!

I really don't believe his line about 2 cars welded together. (How could you weld two cars together at the firewall? Does he mean that it has a complete doghouse from another car?)

I see a boost gauge. So that means that either:

A: It's really just an S, with the gauge pod, rear valance, emblem, and some other bits from a 951.

<or>

B: It's a turbo that had some decent front end damage, and someone went on the cheap and bolted on some 944 fenders, bumper, and valance.

My vote is for "A", because of the Vin# that TT references above.

Ya know what, looking at the photos of the front of the car, I may have to retract my guess above and go with "B". It looks like a 951 header panel and h/l covers on there. It's "curvy" compared to the front bumper profile.

Or it just could be a bastard car like Dave said.

Not really, there were only 2 replies when I started. Is it just me or are there no pictures with the hood open, who's to say there's even a 951 engine in it?

The 1988 944 S had the rear underbody valance from the factory. Porsche added it due to complaints that the '87 S looked exactly like the NA.
Someone just slapped a turbo badge on it.
The gauge pod could have been a replacement due to a broken odometer with the added bonus of a non functional boost gauge.

To me that thing just screams "Parts Car!"

$20 says there isn't a turbo under there.

I grew up putting cars together like that. It is hard to detect a good clip job done at the firewall. The seams make it easy to hide the work.

The mileage on the odo is close to what was last reported:

06/20/1994 76,200

This car is a mess. Even if you go for it as a parts car, you have no clue what engine/tranny parts you will get.

Glad I'm the high bidder on this car!

Seriously,
Holy crap reminds me of that BMW horror story that was going around about how that guy purchased a used late 80's BMW M3 and later found out he had two different cars because the PO took to perfectly good halfs of a car and welded them together down the middle to make one good car. Anyone remember that story? It was on roadfly last year. Scarey....
