alternator
A buddy of mine fried his alternator over the weekend, and is going to order another one. Now, he wants to get a hold of the new ones, the 90 amp types from the s2's and turbos. Just out of curiosity, is there anything else that gets replaced during that conversion, or is it a straight replacement?

I'm not 100% on this, but I believe the new ones have a larger pulley for use with the wider belts and pulley on the a/c compressor & crank (think it's 9-splines on the belt). Don't see why it wouldn't be okay to just use the smaller belt on it though.

Poly rib belt. Like a bunch of small V belts bonded together.
The early 90 amp alternator has five "ribs". The later 110 plus amps alternator has 6 ribs. Don't know if the pulleys can be swaped. The poly rib pulley on the crank is a bolt on and can be swaped.

Thanks, you're right once again now that I'm thinking about it, as the later Nippo a/c compressors had 6 splines; My Sanden has the 9-spline "universal" pulley on it which obviously doesn't use all of them since I have the 5-spline belt (that's why that number 9 was sticking in my head). In any event, it sounds like he could either swap pulleys or just run his existing narrower belt; I doubt it would be a problem (it gives me no problem doing that with the Sanden on mine, and this is a similar situation).
