How track worthy are Mille Miglia wheels?
#16
It's nice to see a post where the Dish wheels praised....
I've often thought of getting Cup 2's but there's just not enough incentive: Dishes are really light, really strong, good tires cost less, and they have sort of vintage/classic appeal to them (a la fuchs).
My only complaint is that the anodize finish tarnishes easily, but I'm planning on painting the wheels and caps the "Wurth" silver.
Anybody ever tried painting over anodize?

Rob,
Quit trying to talk your trashcan lids up, you know that nobody likes them.
Actually I have seen them polished and I think they were really good looking like that. Do you know how much they weigh? Maybe next time you get new tires you should throw one on a scale.
later,
John

Based on a few different sources, they weigh 18.5# in the front and 20# in the rear.... which is a tad heavier than the factory Cup 2's. However, there is more sidewall on 16's than 17s (neglecting width), bringing the overall wheel weight to about the same as the Cup 2's: 43#(f) and 48#(r).
By the way, John, weren't you the one telling me I didnt need Cups this weekend? Or were you too drunk to remember?
Anyway, I'm not too much a fan of the polished finish.... I'd rather paint over the anodize (if possible).

FWIH, the reduced sidewall of a lower profile tire doesn't amount to much. the sidewall is often reinforced to absorb shock from road hazards, a taller tire can absorb the same shock over a greater area.

That's a little over simplified, the location of the mass is also important. A 17" wheel carries most of it's mass further away from the center of the wheel than a 16" wheel does. The further out the weight is located, the greater it's effect, if a 16" wheel and a 17" wheel have the same weight you are better off with the 16" wheel.
I agree with you though: The further out the mass, the greater the rolling inertia ==> the slower you accelerate ==> the slower you decelerate (b/c of the energy put into angular momentum).

I'm also a fan of the dish wheels. FYI, 7x16" and 8x16" Flatdish forged wheels for 944 Turbos have an offset of 52.3mm. I think most of the flatdish wheels on ebay have 928 offsets.

Robert, I also have those wheels on my S. I purchased a replacement for the front left and it came polished. SO..painting was the only option. I used Dupli-Color wheel paint. I first sprayed the wheels with primer, then did 3 coats of the silver wheel paint (the graphite looks like my paint color and didnt look right on the car), I then sprayed a few coats of the clear. They look like the same color as the anodized finish, but without the imperfections and they're easier to clean IMHO. I'd say go for it, only takes a day to spray them down and a day to let them set.

Also, the paint I used from Dupli-Color is specific for wheels, it sprays nice and thick and has lots of metal flake.
