External Oil Coolers
I've seen the KISS kit at 944oilcooling.com. It is basically a Mocal cooler and sandwich plate. Has anyone tried a universal kit (like from Derale)?

For the NAs, a lot of spec racers just sandwich plate. For a turbo, the KISS setup is the easy way to go. You save only a little money, if any, piecing together your own kit. Generic is great, just make sure it's not barbed, hose clamp connections.

I have the KISS kit on my 83 and it makes a difference on the track. Not sure it helps much in town traffic. Probably not enough air folw. I priced pieces and would not have saved enough to be worth while. The kit is excellent quality.

JP, use an RX7 cooler if you want a cheap route, they can be had for between 15-50 dollars from Mazda Auto Recycling among other places.

You just remove the two hoses from the oil-filter housing that runs to the existing oil-cooler. Then get two new hoses with the proper fittings to fit the RX-7 cooler. Many people done this, you can ask them where to get the hoses & fittngs. Someone even posted pictures of his recent install.

This is an NA. I don't know how I can plumb it other than a sandwich plate. What are the problems with the barbed/hose fittings? They supposedly can handle the pressure.

If it's an NA, just remove the oil-cooer housing and replace it with one from a 951. Since you have an external cooler now, you don't need the NA's heat-exchanger anymore. Will also reduce future potential problems with oil & water mixing as well.
