Default failed emmisions-high CO

I'm in Mass and can only have 30 g/mile but tested at 50 g/mile.

Everything else was OK.

Car is an '86 NA with 115K miles. Not much to adjust on these, so any help would be appreciated. Fuel mileage seems OK. Does have the 'surge' effect which from other posts may be related to a worn variable resistor in the AFM.

How was the O2, NOx, and HC?

Generally, if CO is high, HC is high and NOx is low because the engine is not burning all of the fuel (running rich). But since you are close, it might be catalytic convertor is not working as it should.

I retested today and passed.

When I installed a new O2 sensor a few years ago I soldered the wires. I read recently that this is a no-no (why?), so I cut and crimp spliced the wires. I removed the air filter as it was a bit dirty and I made sure the car was well warmed up.

One intersting thing is the car no longer surges during low speed acceleration. I tested the AFM and it was fine.

I think the biggest difference was the guy doing the test. I noticed the first guy was really aggresive on revving the car through the gears which made me wonder about it ever getting into closed loop. The second guy was much smoother and let the car 'cruise' much more (same place).

Anyway, it passed and I am good for two years.

Kragen Autoparts sells something (I'm not sure what it is), but it comes in a blue box, and it guarantees you too pass emissions. Just go to Kragen, and ask for that stuff. It costs $6.99 over here

When I installed a new O2 sensor a few years ago I soldered the wires. I read recently that this is a no-no (why?)
Because, the sensor is vented to ouside air through the wire. The solder prevents the air from reaching the inside of the sensor, which works off differential oxygen concentration.

I found this so incredible that I posted a rather embarassing message. But, indeed, it is true.
