Default Help with tire rub (With pictures)

Alright, my Tercel blew up, so if anyone has an extra toyota tercel engine or a toyota paseo engine, I reall y could use it. But also, this means the porsche is my daily driver. This is great fun, but I absolutely have to do something about this tire rub, not only is it tearing up the tread, I'm worried about messing up my fenders.

The wheels are 7.5" by 18" ET 50 in the front. I'm using a 1/4inch spacer as you can see in the pictures below.

The fenders feel like they've been rolled, but I guess I could roll them a little more if I need to.

The car was parked on an incline, normally it doesn't actually touch the tire as there's some distance above it (.5 - 1 inch), and I only rub when I'm turning.

I'm willing to spend up to $1000 to get this fixed ASAP, but I can't take the car off the road because its my daily. I have the PD's if I really really need them, but they'll need new tires.

What size of tyres are you running? How does it look on the inner wing? Can you look at removing/reducing the spacer?

ET50 with 1/4" spacer equals ET ~44 ... it's only rubbing a bit, right? As I've seen ET 49 8" wide wheels fit in front of late offset car ...

How much camber are you running there? Having a bit more could do the trick.

Also, here's a wild idea.. the you need the spacers to clear the bearing dust cap, right..? Would it be possible to machine the center hole in the wheels to accept the cap..? So you could toss the spacer and move the wheels 6mm inwards that way... or should I just go and get some sleep?

The tires are 225/40 ZR 18's and there's no way I can take off the spacers. The dust cap in the center of the rotor sticks out too far and makes me require a spacer. Can I get different rotors or something that would let me mount these flush?

Thanks again.

Hey yeah I could machine the wheels a bit to get past the center cap area, but is that going to comprimise the strength of them at all? I'm still young and stupid, so I drive the car fast

Take off the dust cap and the spacer. I had to remove the cap and so did Brian Perry. He's been running without them for a long time. The wheel itself seals up the area.
I'm running the same size tires on 18 x 8 wheels and don't have any rub. A touch of negative camber will help also.

Remove spacer, increase negative camber (at the expense of tire life), and roll fender some more.

nickhance,

Now you make me nervous. I just bought a set of ATP wheels (8x17 and 10x17) that looks similar to yours. They were mounted on a 944S2 supposedly without spacers, but with (front) tire cuts more severe than yours.

I took a quick look at the wheels and if needed 1/4" can be turned off the center section leading down to the smaller diameter holding the center cap (giving room for the hub dust cap). Fortunately the potentially machined section does not carry any stress.

It will probably take a week before I "try them on". If I need to have them machined I'll make a drawing and let you know.

Laust

PS I am running -2 deg camber.

Maybe smaller diameter springs which will aid in the increased negative camber.

Alright, I'm going to ask a friend about machining the wheels a bit, but running without the dust cap seems like it might be ok until I can get the wheels machined. That just means I won't be able to do autocross or anything until I put it back on (because my phonedials don't have center caps).

I am thinking of ordering the following items from paragon. Are these the right parts?

Caster Block - updated
Wheel Stud - 45mm
Strut - Koni Sport, front

For a quick fix I would crank up the camber and roll the fender lip as much as possible.

BTW 17x8 ET 49 235/40 rubbed on a turbo S...but I'm still not sure if the turbo S has a different offset. I know the wheels do, but I'm not sure if the suspension does.

You can pop the cap back on when you run the phonedials.
By all means get the updated 968 caster blocks. The 18's put more stress on the arms and the 968 blocks have a lot less rubber. One of my stock caster blocks disinregrated when I removed it.

Thanks, but unfortunately my car is an 87. I know this isn't a problem on the 86's.
