Things to do to minimize the chances you'll end up in the same situation as Campeck:
1. don't surf using IE on a PC. Try Firefox or any other browser out there. A lot of this stuff depends on IE's ability to install software on your PC without notifying you or asking for permission. Other browsers aren't as vulnerable.
2. Don't use Kazaa or WinMX or ANYTHING ELSE LIKE THEM. nearly all software packages like that include spyware, and other nasty things.
3. don't go to online casino sites. most of the people i've seen that have huge spyware infestations also like to play on shady casino websites.
4. don't click on any banner ads EVER unless they're for a VERY reputable company.
5. if you do get infected, use Adaware AND Spybot. you HAVE to use both. neither one will catch everything, but using one in conjunction with the other comes close. make sure you tell spybot to run after rebooting. also make sure you use the 'inoculate' feature in spybot, too. there still could be some things on there that won't be caught, though.
6. if you can't clean the PC using adaware and spybot and you're not comfortable hacking your own registry, then the only other option is to format and reinstall. that means you'll be completely erasing your hard drive, so if there's ANYTHING you need on there, back it up first.
OR, if you just don't ever want to have to worry about any of this ever again, try UNIX (which includes mac's) or Linux! I can go to any site I want to no matter how sketchy and not worry about spyware or virii 'cause i'm not using a windows PC. and since I don't use my PC for surfing, it stays clean and safe for playing games.

CWshredder is good for some hard-to-reach spyware and browser hijackers:

Iinternet explorer got infected on my computer about a year ago. Although I ran spy bot and adaware, I could not clean up IE. I have since switched to Mozilla firefox and have gotten the Zone Alarm firewall and have never experienced any other problems. I have reformatted a couple of hard drives and could come over to help you if you want. I don't have a windows xp cd, but I have a windows 2000 CD that we could use.

Hey Campeck,
I make my living in the software industry. Just because I work for the company that makes most peoples software everyone in my family thinks I will solve their technical problems. Usually I am a good sport and help them out.
The other night my mom called with a problem very similar to yours. I told her to unplug her computer and pay someone who knows what their doing to fix it.
You could learn a lot from this experience. I suggest that you do some primary research, develop an in depth technical understanding of the problem(s), and try to fix it yourself.
The easy way to solve these problems is to cut bait, back up your files, and nuke your hard drive. Contrary to what some people are suggesting I would not endorse a strategy of seeking security through obscurity.
Good luck, I hope you learn a lot!
Cheers,
Matt
