Recirculating A/C on early 944 ?
Is there any way to set the A/C to recirculate on a 1984 944, or do I need ot just keep re-cooling the outside air? I couldn't find any know setting for this in the operators manual. Thanks.

Someone recently posted a thread on replacing the heater core and showed a diagram or two of the Heat/AC system. You might study that diagram and see if there isn't a way to block off incoming outside air. I'll bet someone has figured out a way to do it.

I can confirm that Steve. I just dragged out the shop manual and the early 944 AC only pulls air from the inside of the car. There is a squirrel cage blower on the far right side of the passenger footwell under the dash. This is where the AC air is pulled in and forced through the evaporator. It looks like there are also supposed to be butterfly-type valves that close off the heater compartment when the temp slider is over on cold. When my AC last worked, it did a very good job in south FL summers. Perhaps your AC just isn't properly charged up Jim?

Luis,
I think your comment was understood as you intended. There is no button to recirculate the air on the early models. No way to choose between cooling outside or inside air.
My post was to point out that outside air is not cooled with the early ac. Like Jim, I was under the impression that outside air was blown across the evaporator until last week. The diagrams that SoCal posted to my question about replacing the heater hoses make this clear.

I think whenever Porsche comes to the realization that the early 944 NA was one of the best models they ever put out for the money, they will track down SoCal and beg him to travel to Stuttgart to let 'em know "where it's really at."

My A/C is working fine, even in 105 degrees, assuming it doesn't go out during the summer. I just know with other cars I have owned in the desert, after you leave them parked in the sun for a few hours, it is suggested you cool the outside air for a few minutes (which is cooler than the inside air, which is like an oven), and then switch to inside air. If the early 944 always uses inside air, then that is probably the best once the inside of the car is cooled down. Thanks for all the insight, and I second the thought that SoCal should be on Porsche's payroll :-)
