Default Next Project>>Pwr to Manual rack conversion

Greaseslingers,,,

Looks like I have off Sun Mon Tue for June.

So,,, I've got this manual rack sitting here in the garage...

I'm thinking Sun June 20th would be a nice time to tackle this here project. I need to find the "other" intermediate" shaft before then however.

I take it that I am looking for one from a manual rack? It is longer?? I figure I will probably get new tie rod ends for the manual rack as well.

What else do you think I'll need/want to do while I've got it apart?

The BIG question.....who's around to help????

Bribery...Food??? Beverage???? Airline peanuts???

i converted my car to manual.... it was easy Here are the steps involved.

1. Take off power steering belt
2. remove crank bolt and take off your stupid bent power steering pully that vibrates at high rpms.
3. put crank bolt back in.
4. enjoy not having a nice clean engine that is not always being covered with fluid leeking out of those stupid plastic boots.

oh and i guess you could actually change the rack... but why bother. Ive been using my power rack with no belt or pump for a long time now.

cass i did the same thing as you. Mine started leaking and power steering would only work in one direction...it was a little awkward to drive. Anyway, from about 50-70 mine seems to vibrate now pretty bad. Not just the wheel like a lot of these cars but its making and awful sound too, it stops when you are turning though. I'm thinking the rack is loose. I dont know if its just from not having fluid in there for so long or just from being old.

Yeah, mine runs that way since I bought it. I remember, one of my first questions was "what's this?" pointing towards the PS fluid reservoiur. I knew it didn't have P/S, so why would it have a place to put P/S fluid in...DOH...I ended up taking it out. Got nothing on that side of engine bay. no cruise, no window washer, no P/S....Greater heat dissipation, that's what I say...

I think the manual setup has a better (ie..closer) ratio on the turning radius, plus I think the tie rod ends are bad,,,,so.....

Anybody got the intermediate shaft that I need to swap this puppy out???

i've got one, but it's installed in my car at the moment

you know what i'd like to do - get some new ones made, it seems there's a few racks floating around without the shaft that links them around... i know it would be a great help.

oh, and while you're in there, don't forget to pull out all those stupid power steering fluid lines - its only a few pounds, but when its gone everything in there is just so much cleaner. i found that to be the hardest part of the switch.

I will likely be around. I'm going to need to pull my engine sometime around that time (I hope).

Did it on my 86 951. The shaft is about 2cm longer which allows you to connect. Since you have an NA it's going to be easy probably won't take you longer then 3 hours. I seen the NA engine bay there and the shaft is so easy to get to unlike on the 951. I seen the used shafts going on ebay sometimes for 20-30$.

It looks like I will be doing this conversion soon. Can someone please post the all-inclusive parts list needed to convert an early-offset car to a manual rack? Thanks! (sorry for the hijack) Just pulling the pump and hoses is not the way to go for me, I want the correct ratio so it feels "correct".

Any problems with what you did at all? Hows the steering feel and how hard is it to turn the wheel?

Summers coming, which means lots of time to work on my car!

You guys don't want to just unhook the hoses and pump it's not good. The power steering rack is built to use power steering fluid. All you need to do this is:
1. Manual Rack
2. The manual rack shaft
3. Sometime to work on it.
4. WD 40 and Coke to get things loose.
5. Only applies to late offset cars you will need longer tie rods as known as Turbo Cup ones since they had manual rack with late offset the 87+ ones. You can either track some down I know the dealer has some or can get them or I heard Lindsey racing will mod the early ones to make them longer.
6. Long drive afterwards

James, June 20th is Father's Day. Ordinarily I'd be watching the 24 hours of Lemans, but I'll ask for that day off and gladly come help you. Just put a TV with cable in the garage!
