Head Problem
I am looking at a 924 S that the timing belt went on. From what I hear the head only need to be replaced. If this is the case (being a air cooled Porsche guy) how much time/labor would go into such a project? The car was started and then the timing belt snapped, so it was run long at all. A few seconds from what I gather. Please folks, some thoughts for a 911/914 guy would be great. Best wishes - Jay Gratton

Though not the head itself, the valves, lifters and springs may most likely have to all be replaced. I've seen prices anywhere from 2,500-5,000 just for a head overhaul! Don't goto the dealer unless you crap $20's. Good luck with your dilemna.

I am concerned too about the valves and lifters, but I was told all it needed was a head. HMMMMMMMMMMMM? Thanks for the help Andy. Best wishes - Jay Gratton

Jay, until you pull the head, you won't know if there is damage to the P&C. A possibility if the valves hit the pistons. Something else to keep in mind....

Jay,
The lifters will be fine. Just take the head off and replace it with the replacement head (which is complete with valves). At most one or two valves bent. Usually no piston damage occurs. From what I hear the car just cranked over for a couple of seconds and never actually started. Although that really doesn't matter much. A valve can bend just turning over the motor by hand if the timing was off.
