That silly upshift arrow...

OK, maybe a stupid question but I thought the later dashes didn't have shift lights. But yet I see guys posting here with later cars mentioning their shift light. I've NEVER seen a shift light on my dash....don't think it has one. Am I right or do I have a bulb to go change?

not stupid, people post like everyone should know exactly what's going on. this is how you learn! the shift light was an option for either early or late cars, not standard equipment. it looks exactly the same from early to late, just a little orange arrow that says 'you aren't driving right' or 'this is the point of maximum power, no point to revving me anymore, shift please!'

Hmm. I had my cluster apart, and I did see the cutout with the orange piece of plastic in there, but no bulb. I do not see it on my option codes, unless it comes with something else (sport suspension perhaps? I do not have that either). But, I wonder if it's possible for me to simply stick a bulb in there, and see if it comes on.
On a late dash, where exactly is it? I just want to make sure I'm thinking of the right cut-out, because the ABS cutout is orange as well (despite mine being an 86, it still has the cutout for ABS!).
So, back to driving, I usually shift at 3000-3500 once it's warm, between 2500 and 3000 if it's cold. If I'm pushing it a little, usually shift 4000ish, but once in a while, it will see 5000-6000rpm =)
However, it is a good rule to follow not to drive around with the engine under 2000RPM (in gear), that's definately lugging it, and will cause you some main-bearing headaches in the future. Just ask my PO about all the headaches he caused me....

Just a word to everyone. The light will turn on depending on how much you want to accelerate. if you drive like an "old lady" then the light will go on at a lower RPM. If you give the car more gas, than the light will come on at a higher RPM. Im sure the light is for fuel economy along with performance depending on the weight of your foot.

i want to accelerate to redline in every gear. but unfortunately johnny law doesn't like that. they just increased speeding fines 'round here too... that means i DOUBLE gotta behave. anyhow - the light works on a multitude of sensors - including the tps... so yes the rpm it comes on is directly related to throttle(foot) position.
