Smile Front versus rear hub fastening

I'm just about to repack/adjust my front wheel bearings and it suddenly struck me that the front hubs don't seem to be kept on by much. The rears have a beefy looking castle nut that is tightened to some imposible torque figure whereas the front hubs are retained by a small locking collar.

Am I missing something?

Cheers,

Neil

Different designs.

Front is timkins (tapered roller bearings) that should be set just a tad loose. Rear is a double ball bearing single unit that requires a set preload through the inner races thus the large nut.
