Default Have you ever personally removed a transmission from a 968 / 944?

Specifically a Tiptronic, but manual transaxles may be similar??

It seems like what I have to do is:

· Remove both axles

· Remove the 3 or 4 bolts that hold the TQ converter to the flex plate

· Remove the transmission fluid lines

· Remove some electrical connectors

· Remove the shift mechanism.

· Unbolt the transmission from the big cast Al torque tube flange? This is where it gets interesting. Are these four bolts really all that holds the transmission into the chassis? I don’t see any other obvious mounts.

· Two of the bolts (the lower ones) are easy access from the front of the trans.

· The two top bolts look like a major PITA since they are buried between the floor pan and the transmission. Tips on accessing these appreciated.

What am I missing??

TIA for the help.

Craig

There is a transmission mount above the transaxle center section (right where the fluid hoses connect), bolted laterally to a crossmember which is bolted vertically on either end to the chassis.

Thanks, I'll take a look.
Any chance you have an exploded view diagram you can point me to?

I find it easiest to reach the transmission mount bolts (on a manual...) by removing the RR wheel and using a long extension.
But I've never actually seen the underside of an automatic car.
Good luck!

Sorry not to be rude, but there are a TON of guides, walkthroughs documentation on how to do this if you search google (clarks, fourtothefloor, pelican, Jurgen's videos):
https://www.google.com/search?q=pors...hrome&ie=UTF-8

Im always curious why people post before doing a search. Perhaps you did and didnt find what you were looking for? Concerned about large differences between manual and auto?

Easy job, at least the manual trans is.
Make sure you have a trans cradle to put on your floor jack.
Good time to fill the trans mount with Polyurethane, several good threads on the forum about this mod.
Repack CVs with Redline CV-2 red grease.
Does the auto use the same torque tube coupler as the manual. Fasteners strip every time.

Thanks for the links, though these seem to be 944 specific, not 968 and certainly not tiptronic. I am learning about similarities between 944 / 968.
I'd never heard of fourtothefloor or Jurgen's.
And yes, I've been here since 2006, trust me I searched before posting :-)
