Default Need to do front seals, a few questions

I was under my car today, and noticed that my small oil leak of a few months ago (a few drops a day) has gotten worse, to the point where I need to take care of it soon. Anyway, I had a few quick questions:

1) Any special tools I'll need besides a belt-tensioning tool?
a) where can I get them?

2) How long does this usually take?

3) Should I replace the belts (~6000 miles)?

Thanks.

You will need a flywheel lock, and the 2 special wrenchs , I made mine.
It took me about 5 hours, but I could do it in much less now.
I would change the belts and check all the rollers. belts are pretty cheap.
Good Luck

Ok, where would I get the special wreches, or how would I make them?

About an hour longer than changing belts for the crankshaft and both balance shaft seals. I have no idea about the camshaft seal.

About the belts, you need to look at them and assess the condition. If they're oil soaked, replace them. And be sure to clean the oil out well.

You'll also need a pin wrench for the balance shaft cogs.

Check this website for tools: http://www.arnnworx.com/. I don't know anything about these specific tools, maybe someone else who bought some can tell if they are worthwhile.

I bought the kit from arnnworx and it is great. I just finished up the reseal a few weeks back. Some reseal kits don’t come with the o rings for the balance shaft seal housing. Might as well replace those while you are in there. Also make sure you have a good torque wrench that reads down to 5 ft/lbs (oil pump bolts 8 nm). If you do the crank seal you will need anaerobic sealer for the pump to block connection (if you pull the pump). I had to pull the pump on mine because the drive gear for the oil pump would not come out. If you do the crank seal and pull the pump you might want to look into a new oil pan gasket. You have to break the seal to get the pump out...I just went ahead and did it to avoid problems down the road. The cam housing seal is not bad. For that you will need a 10mm cheese head (I used the SK set) and a 32mm open end wrench. I did mine off the car but if you do it on the car be very careful. If you move the cam too much there is a good chance of bending the valves. If I were to do it I would get a few dowel rods (equal length) and set it up so all the pistons are mid way when doing the bolt. HTH

I would think the rollers would be OK. Just wipe them off. The belt would be the issue since it may be wet with oil and break. The rollers are metal so just clean them up so no residual oil spoils the new belt. Be prepared to drill out the cam sprocket bolt. It usually strips.

I bought a "reseal" kit from Zim's - looks good but I was kind of wondering if ALL the seals are there. Nothing is more annoying than getting into a job like that and then realizing you don't have all the parts. At best, you lock up all the tools, secure the car, go upstairs, clean up, go to dealer (if they're open), get ripped off, come back, unlock tools, and pick up again. ROYAL pain in the butt.

Anybody have a list of EXACTLY what all the seals are? I think mine came with two balance shaft seals and o-rings, cam seals & ring, etc. but conspicuously absent was a crankshaft seal. Should there be one?

Oh, be really careful not to confuse the balance shaft seals. They are almost identical, but not really. One is slightly larger. There is a little arrow molded on the seal that shows the rotation of the balance shaft. As keith points out above.

That is a very comprehensive list - EXACTLY what I was looking for. I'll check it against what they sent me and post the results tomorrow. MUCH thanks for that post - that's some of the most useful information I've seen here in a while.

Not necessarily, take them off and feel to the bearing. If not real tight, or producing a high tone sound when rolled, replace them.
This still does not guarantee that the good ones will last till the next belt change.

My kit from zims had everything but the balance shaft housing o rings. Go ahead and pick some up... I would be pissed if I did all that work and didn’t take a minute to do them, and it leaked down the road.

Make sure that you examine the sleeves that go on the end of the balance shafts well. I did my front seals two times ... paid my mechanic to do it the 3rd time and he told me that the continued leak was from the lower balance shaft sleeve having a pitted area in it where the seal made contact with it.

Not replacing a $30 part cost me over $500 to have someone point it out. I felt like a dumb a$$.

PET calls it a spacer, part # 928-105-139-02
