orig944, I installed a Kenwood head unit & set of Pioneer TS-G4645R 4x6 in the doors & rear with no issues. I just wanted a plain stereo, nothing fancy, that fit with zero modifications. They sound fine just don't expect audiophile quality that you'll win car stereo competitions with lol.

That's exactly what people said about the Alpines.

Are you referring to the Alpine's you had to cut the outer frame pictured above? I remember folks saying at the time a certain model of 4x6 Alpines fit with zero mods but I couldn't find a new set anywhere (were probably NLA). So I went with the Pioneers.

They specified that model, but it did not work. Mine came in from Europe as they were NLA in the US. Again, I think they would fit in the hole if the splash guard was not still in place.

My car has a large silicone/latex/something? boot that goes over the speaker to prevent water ingress. Is that what you mean by splash guard, or are you talking about the full-door sheet of plastic?

(The Retrosound's dropped right in to the boots on my car, and required no spacers on the speaker grills.)

Those are the splash guards, and the retrosounds absolutely DID NOT drop in in my car.

Huh. Are you sure you have the 'N' RetroSounds? (They used to sell a non-neodymium model that was larger, though I see they only have the neodymium 4x6's on their website now.)

Yes, R-463N. The grill spacer I made includes 7mm between the splash guard and/or door metal and the speaker mounting ears. The factory speakers have spacers there as well, but I don't think they are that thick. Anyway, I'm happy with what I have, even if it was a PITA.

So, what fits? I have an early 944. I don't want to change the look. so it has to fit in the original slots and handle 40W without blowing up, not that I'll ever crank it to that.

Whadda ya got?
Infinity Reference 4x6. Crutchfield has a decent tool to identify plug and play parts.

I thought the Infinity's tweeter was a bit too proud? (That's why I went with Retrosound, anyway. But maybe I'm remembering that wrong; it has been a few years.)

It is barely right up and against the screen, but fits. I did have one grill pop off because of it. Replaced with two small dabs of shoe goo to keep it in place. They sound great.

I bought the Continental, but is not plug and play so I'm keeping the OEM head unit in place as it works well. Interesting Speaker plugs on that unit, neve seen that before. I am going to put the Conti unit in my 912 as it's OEM harness was long cut up and out. I use a Bluetooth transponder that plugs in the cig lighter and has USB power outlets. Not sure how the grills are on other/older 944's, but they fit easily under the S2 door speaker grills.

I was able to adapt the original car harness to the wiring harness that come with the Conti without modification to the car. (The radio harness actually came from the Fauxpunkt I had in before, same connectors, seems to be a standard now.) Connectors that mate to the funny car harness speaker connectors can be found by searching for "german speaker connectors" on ebay. Add them to the Conti harness, along with some quick disconnects and you're in business.

Ahh, yes, the S2 has the plastic frames with metal grills. My '87 just has a flat plastic grill with no frame.

I can see how the Infinity speakers would fit. The backshell rise off the mounting plane is angled on the Infinity speakers. It rises vertically on the Alpine and Retrosound speakers. That angle, combined with the factory spacers, means that it can fit in a smaller opening.
