Default Rear sway bar

I've just started driving the 944 and really like the balance, but the rear end feels like it rolls too much. This is most noticable on a turn that crests at the apex. I get heavy oversteer. I have an 86 NA with no rear sway bar. Couple of questions.

Has anyone installed one and really noticed a difference? Or is this just a defect of the semi-trailing arm suspension?

Where can you get one? I only want OEM parts.

Can it be installed without altering the car? I would think that all the attachment points are already there since the turbos have them and it was a factory option.

Thanks in advance.

I put the 19mm 3-way adjustable 968 M030 sway bar on the rear of my 86 NA and was a great improvement over the 14mm factory bar. Stiffening up the rear means more oversteer. Paragon has them.
Highly recommended (both the bar and the vendor).

Adding a rear swaybar without doing anything up front will only give you MORE oversteer.

I am surprised that without a rear swaybar you have oversteer issues: our cars tend to understeer like a pig. You may want to check if your front sway bar has issues.

Sorry Z, I still gotta disagree with that. The S2 and Turbo may tend to understeer like a pig but the factory was much nicer to us 8V NA guys when they chose the spring rates (maybe they felt sorry for the lack of hp/tq). Either add the stock size rear bar or add a larger rear along with a larger front to keep the balance, a drastic change at the rear of an 8v NA without a front upgrade isn't a happy mix.

I was and still am considering adding a rear sway to my 924S, i was going to go with the 19mm M404 bar, but was told by a few people that it would greatly unbalance the cars handling. You would need to upgrade to a larger front swaybar if going for a larger bar, otherwise i would go with something stock like the 14mm rear sway.

i have a 14mm bar, rear brackets and bolts, and the old bushings you can have for 25 bucks + shipping.
i replaced the 14mm with an 18mm, but also changed the front to 25.5mm.

all you need are the drop links, mounting and eccentric bolts and new 2 new bushings for the bar.

Thanks Fezz, I will keep you in mind. I see Paragon sells the drop links, but they may only fit their bar. I never looked at a rear bar closely. Where do they actually mount it to?

Talk with some guys who track their 944 n/a's. I believe they will say the same thing I claim. . .

However, no matter how you argue the issue, StoogeMoe's oversteering condition will only be more exaggerated with a rear swaybar. Stiffen the rear will always result in more oversteer.

I have a 27mm front and 18mm rear, and still understeers and rolls too much, so I am putting on a 22mm rear on today. I'll post back latter and tell you how it drives. I'm also running 275lb springs front and an equivalent combo on the rear. Think I will take it for a drive with no rear bar just to see how it feels.

spring rate will also influence the suspension balance.
as i understand it - you have to balance springs, sways, and torsion bars.
Not too long ago, Skip and I posted suspension set-up charts for all the years - from that you can see what came from the factory for the various components, which I assume are balanced suspensions?

fezz:
Our cars came with a suspension setup that favors an understeering attitude. This is typical of most cars sold in the USA. Why? because an understeering car is easier to bring under control for the typical (dumb) US driver.

Rear sway bar drop links fit all models.

The 22mm sway bar is made by Weltmeister and is available from many aftermarket Porsche specialists.

Here's a link to the Tech-Session on sway bars: http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index...x_v2&id=23&c=4

Not only is it easier to gain control or stop with understeer, it is also usually safer to hit things with the front of the car rather than the side or rear.

If you are oversteering with no sway bar on crested corners then your entry or exit should be adjusted. Take a different line - maybe slow-in fast-out. Is this on a track or street? Oversteer can happen in any car if the rear suddenly loses load.
