make my 87 944S have vague steering?

Unlikely, but it can't help. If you're having a problem, replace what you know to be bad first. Bad or missing sway bushings usually produce a clunk or improper/abrupt load shifting during cornering. Take a look at the tie rod ends and inner tie rods (under the boot). Also, check the control arm ball joint (search here for complete how-to) and upper strut bushings.
