Default Starter motor won't shut off

Well I zipped into Winnipeg, a 3 hr drive from here, she ran like a watch.
On the way home we had a spring snowstorm and I drove the last hour in slush and water.
I got home and parked the car, no problems.
This morning I went to start the car and the starter motor did not shut off when the car fired. I switched off the ignition and the motor still turned over until I disconnected the battery. I left the car all day, which was quite humid, thinking she would dry our, anyway, I touched the cable to the battery and the starter motor turned the motor over even though there was no key in the ignition.
I don't know if it has any bearing, but I visited a friendly service station and got them to hoist the car and get the leaking washer tank out. I think he removed all his tools, as I once dropped a wrench on the solenoid
of a Massey Ferguson tractor and it took off.
Any ideas, folks?
TIA,
Mike Bonner

I have never heard of that happening. If there isn't something sitting on it shorting it out I would think it would have to be the solenoid.

Never heard of that happening, either.

You defintely need to look at the starter to assure the connections are good and there are no shorts. Maybe a sharp rap on the solenoid if you think irs stuck.

Steve, does the solenoid have a rubber boot that may be full of water, causing a short, has to be the solenoid, I'm sure,

Yes there is indeed a rubber boot over the connectors on the solenoid.

I hadn't thought of that, but I think that'd be the first thing to check.

You need to get under the car and take a look at the wiring on the solenoid. Sounds like some of the wiring has gone bad and is shorting together. If that is not it, undo the trim on the steering column and unplug the inigtion switch and hook the battery up and see if it still spins. When you first happened, when you had to un-hook the battery, did you still have power to your windows and radio?
