Default Dash bulbs? Perhaps Paging IceShark

Dan,

I'm looking for new bulbs for my dash ligting. Specifically I want to replace the small incadescents in the gauge panel (12 small and 3 large). No one in town has these and the Dealer is across the lake. Is there somewhere online that I can find them? I've done a couple of searches and have struck out so far.

Scott R.

Here are the 2 different types that I need. Instrument panel takes 12 of the black socket lights and 3 of the white sockets. Anyone know where to get them?

I got some when I was at Zims (Dallas), decent price and for small stuff they only charge actual US Mail shipping costs. 800-356-2964

I couldn't find them anywhere locally in the correct wattage.

Scott, if Zim's has them in stock I'd do what Paul did. Most retailers are never going to carry the correct bulb because hardly anyone uses them and in those little bulbs you have to buy them in full boxes. So the average retailer is stuck with all this extra inventory for the next 15 years.

The LED's work a lot better than incandescent.

Their is an article at Clark's Garaga about dash lighting but it only concerns the 3 large bulbs. I used nail polish to clean the illumination area for the 3 large bulbs. Put a reflective tape and used the Sylvania 194LL (long life) bulb that I bought at Advance Auto Parts.
The difference is remarkable, I can read the guages without having the lights at full brightness.

Charlie, those 194LL are 5 watt bulbs. People have had trouble melting plastic with 5 watt bulbs in the dash so you may want to reconsider. A #158 is 3.36 watts but only lasts 500 hours. The #161 is 2.66 watts and lasts over 4000 hours.

I *think* all those little bulbs are Sylvania #2721 and are 1.2 watt. Those would cross to a Wagner 17037 or Philips 12516. But I've never actually taken them out of my car to confirm.

Iceshark,
Here is the bulb description from Clark's website.
According to them these bulb are 3.78 watts. Are they wrong

Sylvania 158 3.3 W Recommended. Offers a slight improvement over the factory bulbs and will not experience overheating problems. In USA, available at most NAPA and CarQuest. Not widely available at Auto Zone, Advance Auto, or PEP Boys.

Sylvania 161 2.66 W Not Recommended. Offers little improvement over the factory bulbs. In USA, widely available at most auto parts stores.
Sylvania 168 4.9 W Not Recommend. Likely to produce too much heat and hence burn out quickly or cause damage to bulb holder. Readily available at most auto parts stores in USA.

Sylvania 192 4.3 W Questionable. May produce too much heat and hence burn out quickly. In USA, available at most NAPA and CarQuest. Not widely available at Auto Zone, Advance Auto, or PEP Boys.

Sylvania 193 4.62 W Not Recommend. Great improvement over the factory bulbs but, likely to produce too much heat and hence burn out quickly or cause damage to bulb holder. In USA, available at most NAPA and CarQuest. Not widely available at Auto Zone, Advance Auto, or PEP Boys.

Sylvania 194 3.78 W Recommended. Overall, may be the best choice for a lighting upgrade. Offers a good improvement over the factory bulbs and does not produce too much heat. In USA, available at most NAPA and CarQuest. Not widely available at Auto Zone, Advance Auto, or PEP Boys.

Charlie, Yeah, Clark's is wrong about the 194LL as I have a Sylvania catalog in front of me for all the automotive lights. Do the math and the 194LL is 4.62 at design specifications. I rounded a little saying it was 5 watt.

He does have the 194 correct at 3.78 watts so he must have thought the 194 and 194LL are the same except for life ratings. They are not.

His other calculations look about correct except he labels the 192 as only questionable. His calculation is based on the 13 volt design volts and if you drove it at the 14v rating most of the other bulbs are at you would be up around 4.62w.

I think I would go with the 158 to be on the safe side and still get a little more light out of it.

Paul, OK then those numbers I posted above are the correct ones. You can get them in red and green, also.

Iceshark,
I assumed the 194 and the 194LL were the same, that was my doing and not Clark's. He does not mention the 194LL. This just shows what happens when one assumes something.

I can confirm that's what is in my '83. The Sylvania/OSRAM online catalog lists them as the same. 12V, 1.2W.

Default led dial illumination kit

After I bought my 944 s2 I discovered that my dials were not bright at all. This is due to the vac. metalised coating breaking down with age.
I replaced mine with a LED'S, subsequently after posting on the U.K. Porsche Club Forum a couple of guys have taken my kit as there was some interest in this common problem.
I used blue LED's with the nm which has slight UV qualities. Of course any colour can be used.
Being a virgin to this forum I do not know the policies, so for the moment I will post a couple of pics to show you mine and a couple of other colours.
