Default Symptoms of a cv boot failure?

What are the symptoms of a cv boot failure? I tried searching, but the search requires 3 or more characters so it won't let you search on cv.

Anyway, I haven't driven the car for a few days, but I went down to the garage to look at something and I noticed some black globby grease on the lower passenger side of the car. It may be nothing or from someone else, but I fear it may be a cv boot.

What's the easiest way to check it with the car on the ground?

There should be a pretty obvious tear in the boot, that you can certainly feel, if not see. Yes, plenty of ugly black goo will come out.

You can just creep under the rear and feel around the boot w/your hand. Feel for cracks in the rubber, or any type of separation.

If you can lift the car, you can do a much better check (rotate the wheels so you can actually see the boot, as well as feel it).

Good luck.

Dale.

If it is the boot, what would a reasonable charge be to repack a new boot, assuming there is no damage?

It's faster and easier to replace the whole axel, although the parts will cost more than just the boot. This is a good route to go if you're paying someone else to do the repairs.
