Default Transaxle rebuild?

Changed out the turbo trans for a used 944S box (3.89 R&P) on my 1.8T swap race car.
Ratios are just about perfect, for Thunderhill anyway...
Might need to bump the rev limiter to 7500 to avoid 5th at the end of the F straight.

Synchros are great, but not happy with the noises it's making.
Sounds like a pinon bearing....

Holy crap! $400 for a pinion bearing?!
Other bearings correspondingly ridiculous....
Does anyone have a good source for these?
Thanks in advance!

Theres a pretty big euro parts source in england.. cant remember the name but about 10 years ago i had to get a bearing for my wifes tdi jetta, the DSG was making noise… i found schematics for the trans on a Russian website and took it apart. Had the number off the bearing and everything.. could not find it in the u.s. put the trans back together and presto..
actually $400 is decent.. think about it, how many do they sell a year? This trans is no longer in production and almost 40 years old.. it also has the brand porsche.. and no part of those statements equate to “ reasonable” ..

I did the 951 box several years ago.
Don't remember being that shocked by the prices!
Granted, they aren't typical, generic bearings with an interchange to 57 different bearing manufacturers.
Least not as far as I know....

Yes, the prices are that high. There is no alternate source for the expensive bearings in the 944S/2/Turbo transmissions. They are being made, these days, especially for Porsche or Porsche Classic. These are not the same, more commonly available, bearings use in the 016 transmission used in the 944 eight-valve, normally-aspirated car and a bunch of Audi models. I order a pile of them at a time because they have been unavailable at times, for example when the 016-311-220-L got kicked over to the Classic graveyard.

Thanks, Kevin.
I figured if there was a good alternate source for these, you'd know about it....

Have you pulled the side plate off yet? Not having a cutaway pic right in front of me, I can only presume that there are two pinion bearings. One in the bellhousing and the other in the R&P case. If you pull the side plate, be prepared for carnage and crap covered magnets (3). If that’s the case , bundle it all up and send it to Kevin. After that go to the bank or ask for a credit extension on your credit card. Just sayin.. Maybe another trans that is similar??

You say pinion “bearing?”

I’ll just offer that my ring and pinion cost a (expletive)-load more than $400 when I had my 951 trans rebuilt.

Haven't done the teardown yet. Maybe pull it out tomorrow or Mon.
Been dong this 45+ years... I doubt I'll be shocked. Disappointed, perhaps. Paid $600 for the trans.
I'll find out what I find out, but it doesn't howl like a bad R&P.
951 box is still fine anyway, just a little tall for the lower torque.
