Default Yet another catastrophic failure, help diagnosing please

Well, my car has once again transformed itself from a porsche into a paperweight. I was accelerating normally from a stop in 1st gear and there was a distinct POP at about 4,000 RPMS. After that, I could put it in any gear and let the clutch out, it wouldn't engage. It's like having 5 speeds of neutral.. it can be rolled in any gear. Before I assume it's a clutch job, is there anything else it could be? Was thinking driveshaft, CVs..etc? I did the right CV about 6 months back, and as it was going bad it started clicking, it was pretty obvious. Also it was making a little bit of a click in the gearbox region when I shifted. I've got it jacked up, I'm about to go spin the rear wheels and see what happens. In the mean time, any thoughts on what it could be?

Thanks,
Ian

Check the CV joints first before jumping to more severe conclusions. My CV joint failure did the exact same thing- 1st atou 3.5k rpm, pop, no go anywhere.

Yo,

When the cv joint fell off rom the Jetta, the same thing happened....I started to go form a light, and then bam, a huge sound, and car no go....Just spin in all gears....Just enede up being that the bolts were loose and it just eventually fell out of place....So yes a dislocated CV can cause this problem.....If it was your clutch, you would know it....I think......I am really not sure Ian without being there..? How far exactly to your house for me...?

Hmm, it could very well be the right rear CV, I'll check it first. Damien, I'm about 1 1/2 hours away. Give me a call if you want to swing on by player, 847-293-7540

Checking the CV.....

That could definitely be a CV. I had one go without any warning in an old BMW once. Fortunately, I was in a parking lot, so I could just push the car back into the space it came out of.

Look under the rear of the car by the drive axles - if nothing is hanging down, you have likely experienced ring & pinion failure. Drain the transaxle, expect to find metal. Be very sure - remove the right side axle and remove the differential cover plate (13 or so bolts).

EDIT - the r&p makes more sense than a clutch failure since you can still shift gears. If you don't want to drain the fluid, just jack it up and spin the wheels - you'll feel it.

Good Luck - I hope I'm wrong!

Even with no axles hanging, check the CV first. Neither of my axles were hanging, I could shift into gears, but one of the CV joints was totally destroyed inside. From visual inspection, they all looked fine. A little squeeze on each boot, and presto, one had lots of little bits loose inside the boot. The only thing keeping the axle up was the boot and the length of the axle into the center of the joint.

Hope it's not the r&p, just check the cv joints first.

Closing the loop on a "please help me" thread would be much appreciated.

Good - GREAT!

Now's a good time to remind folks that the bolts and holes need to be absolutely CLEAN when reinstalled, TORQUE to spec and RECHECK after 100 miles. It is recommended that you replace CV bolts after one use - YMMV!

Are you sure you can put it in gear? I had the shift linkage at the transmission let go causing it to be like it did make a pop sound aswell. Also when I lost my cv joint same thing but it was in gear.
