I have a question...
I am due for an oil change... The first one I've done since I had the motor rebuilt. The dealer that rebuilt it put in dyno oil, but I've been running Mobil 1 synthetic in everything for years.
But, I want to know what weight oil is reccomended for running in these cars. It's pretty high compression, as I have an '89 S2 Coupe. I looked in the owers manual and it had two pages talking about oil, but never reccomended a particular grade or weight of oil.
I was thinking about running a 10W30 or 10W40 oil, but maybe a 5W30 is better. But, my car will be used as a daily driver and also see the track a few times this summer, and I've always run a thicker weight oil on the track... like a 15W50. I also have a bunch of the 15W50 TrySyn lying around as well.
Any reccomendations??? And, a reasoning why would also be appreciated... Not just "I run this..."
Thanks,

The shop that rebuilt my S2 motor last year put dino in when it was done, and put dino in when it had its first change about 1000 miles later.
he told me to use dino for the first 4000 miles. then to use 15W?? synthetic. he told me the motors are not designed for oil as thin as 5/30.
sorry, i dont have the scientific reasoning, just the mechanic's recommendation.

My mechanic recommends and uses Mobil 1 15W-50, which is what I use.
My car is a track & autocross car, and an occasional drive-to-work car.
If you track the car at all, 15W-50 is certainly the way to go. On a hot day and a hot run, even that will get awfully thin! Make sure you keep an eye on the oil pressure guage when you're out there! (My technique: on the straights I do the following in this order: check temp, check tach, check oil pressure, breathe, check speedo if there's time, brake, turn, smile. Repeat at least once a lap!)
-Z-man.

when i had the car i ran 15-40 in the winter and 20-50 in the summer, agip non-synthetic. this was the recommendation of my very trusted mechanic. the car never burnt one drop of oil between changes.
i could have ran synthetic but didn't, agip is amazing oil.

with more than a quarter million miles on the clock my service records (one PO - my son) indicate my S2 has run on mobil1 0-40 since its first eveer oil change. changed religiously every 6k. Oil pressure is as recommended in the book and compressions were all good when I had a PPI.
Must admit I've just bought 5-40 for the next oil change although there was no real reason to.
My neighbour runs an old 300TE Merc and insists that with synthetic he doesn't need to change the oil at all - just the filter - and claims it's been in there for more than 70K with just an occasional top-up. At £33 UK pounds per gallon it's not cheap over here although it's not something I would attempt to save money on.
Without wanting to highjack the post what are general thoughts about oil filters. On a recent run round Inverness I couldn't find ONE supplier with a 944 filter. Suppose I've got to go to Euro Car Parts now for that.

I agree, I would be using Mobile 1 Synthetic 15w-50 after the recommended break in period. Listen to the dealer on that one. Best wishes - Jay Gratton

Mobil 1 5W-30 for the past three years, then Mobil 0W-40 since it's finally available in my area. In Iowa, we get the best of both worlds: cold winters and hot summers. The car doesn't use any oil between changes.

Dude, put away your phone, and please go smack yourself in the face with a hammer!
IB.... please fix the stupid phone interface, as it seems to be why SO MANY threads are being necromanced by those among us who refuse to READ THE LAST POST DATE PRIOR TO POSTING!
really, 7 years... this thing should have been long dead... and you resurected an OIL THREAD which is why you need the hammer...

Maybe I should just merge every thread with "OIL" in the title?
