Question Ignorant Alpine install question

I was thinking of buying an Alpine 9805 head unit off ebay (it's the only black faced Alpine that doesn't look too freakish). It has 23 watts RMS, XM ready, and reads MP3 cd/rw's.

Can I wire it up using my Crutchfield wiring harness, or do I need power from the battery directly to the Alpine?? I heard Alpines have powerful amps, but 23 watts doesn't seem THAT powerful...right?

Anyone have this head unit in their car?

Don't worry about it. Just wire it from the normal harness.

I was worried about the same thing until I saw the actual gauge of the "power" wire going into the deck. It's the same as the one in the stock harness.

I'm running a 9815 and it works great, you'll love it.

AndyK,

I installed the same, Alpine 9805, in my 1987 N/A.
It came with a connector with multiple wires out of the box. I just stripped and crimped each wire to the standard harness. No need to go to the battery.

Don't think this head unit will actually play MP3s, but will work with an MP3 enabled CD changer.

Any questions/photos/assistance let me know.

A photo would be cool!! How does the unit sound??

Also...are there RCA sub-outs on the back, or what? My Kenwood WOOX self powered sub has RCA inputs.

Thanks!

I have the 9815, sounds fantastic with the Digital Time Correction setup, and yes it has RCA pre outs for subs and for fronts and rears.

Dunno about the 9805, but im quite sure it has sub outs as well.

I'm running the 9805- with the w00x even. Sounds great at non-rediculous volumes. The Alpine is pushing 2 Infinity Kappa 4x6's in the doors and 2 more in the rear. I'm just running them off the head unit amp and I find that the sub will usually start distorting before the 4x6's do at volume. The w00x only runs at 30W rms.

FYI- the 9805 has F/R/sub rca outs in the rear. Great unit, you'll like it!

I'll see what photos I can dig up.

Yes there are RCA outputs, you switch them on through a menu setting on the unit.

The unit sounds good...at least an improvement over the old blaupunkt that had:
Wires twisted and taped together
3 speakers working - 1 of those intermittent
Front speakers were falling to pieces litteraly
Antenna booster amp was not powered.

I'll see what photos I can dig up at home....or slide the unit out and take some more.

about time you started getting your hands dirty. I will e mail you as soon as soon as I hear regarding the other thing. If fate has it where I am in your neighborhood around the time your unit comes in I will be happy to help you install it.

I installed a few units for friends back in the early 80s, and watched the guy do the installs in my 944, so that makes me a little dangerous. Plus I may need the practice!

I can do the rear speakers with you too if you want, just tell me if i have to bring the piece of string.

Is that a hint? Did you finally find a car, Tom?

Wow! The SAME setup! Excellent feedback!

I rarely BLAST music anyway. And I keep the WOOX at less than half level. So there's plenty of room as far as the sub is concerned.

I'm gonna buy me a 9805, green lights and all!

Tom--Thanks for the offer! As long as it's hooking up wires to a harness via butt connectors, I'm good! Definately take you up on the rear speaker/window/cord help offer! Keep me posted...

How do you fit a grill to the Kappas?? I don't have the stock grills, and Radio Shack doesn't have their cheapo ones.

I put a 9820 in my 911, I am not impressed with it, the 7 year old Alpine I replaced was MUCH better.

I'll bite...what don't you like about the newer Alpine??

PS--most ANYTHING from 10 years ago was made better! My OE Blau Charlston is as solid as a rock compared to most new Blau's (Toronto excluded, of course)!
