Default Speedo, Odometer and Cruise Control not working after new axle seals installed.

Yesterday installed new seals on axles at the output due to losing gear oil. 87 NA 944. Afterwards the speedometer, odometer and cruise control didn't work. All worked prior. Since the speed pulse sender is right near the left/driver side axle I think that's the most likely suspect due to all the activity around it with the seal install, banging it in etc. I took that out and the sender and wiring look OK. The little needle is still in the sender. Someone suggested I might have damaged the "drive"? Maybe the little speed ring on that side on the end of the output shaft (not sure about terminology). Seems like too much of a coincidence for the problem to be in the cluster. Anybody have any ideas? Is there a way to test the speed pulse sender? Thanks.
