Default Dash light issues

Hello. I have searched, but I still need help...

After pulling my speedo 3+ times for various repairs, my dash dash lights started to randomly go out, then come back on.

Lately, the randomness stopped, and I would only have a light on the temp guage and the tach. No speedo lights, no gas guage light. (blinker, brights, oil, & battery lights still work).

So, I thought I'd check into the issue. I popped out the guages, turned on the lights, and commenced swapping bulbs - bulbs are fine, it's the location of the bulbs that doesn't work. So, I figured maybe something came loose during the various speedo repairs, and I began to gently jiggle the connections.

When I jiggled one of the bulb/wire connections on the speedo, there was a little flash of light - now I have NO dash lights!

Any ideas? I appreciate any advice you may be able to offer. Oh, it is an early car, too.

TIA,

Dale.

If all of the dash lights are out you have a broken wire at the begining of the wire run for the lights. Could be isolated per gauge cluster.

Also check the dash light dimmer next to the light swtich. These corrode and cause problems.

Thanks SoCal. Before I jiggled the speedo connection, the dimmer was working fine on the couple of lights that actually lit.

I'll begin the hunt for a broken wire.

Thanks again,

Dale.

Dale, I have the exact same problem... today I'm thinking I'll take out the cluster and look for a bad ground or some faulty connection. By the way the lighting would change as to what part of the dash I bumped, it's apperent that it's some shoddy connection in there.

Last night they all ceased to want to work.

I have to replace the little bugger in the oil pressure guage. Can I get to that without pulling the entire console?

LOL.... classic, Pete, classic!

Chris, to get to that, you have to remove the wheel, then take off the dash bezel, then pull the instrument cluster out... it's not as bad as it sounds (ask me how i know). If the tools are there at the 'Fest this weekend, I'll show you how to. I have to remove my wheel and bezel anyways, I forgot to put that stupid trip odo reset back in place, grrrrr. Add that to absent-mindedly turning the key on w/ the airbag removed and being left with an airbag light... it's annoying ahhh the cost of rushing to get out of the shop, lol

what can i say?! I'm impatient sometimes

I've had the speedo and tach out for bulb replacement and speedo gear several times- It's the bulb in the Oil pressure guage that's gone. Mine is in the console (Early dash setup)-
Yeah- we'll will probably look at it this weekend..
