Help Please - headlights
My Headlights don't light up! Not pop up - light up. I keep finding threads, about headlight motor.
1987 924s
1st click on switch all running lights etc. come on.
2nd click lights pop up, but no light.
If I hold Hi Beam switch it goes on.
No Voltage at light. I check fuses and cleaned all looked good. Replaced low beam in case.
How do I I find problem. Can't find a relay, is there one for lights? (not headlight motor). Is there away to check the main switch or the switch on column?
Please help - winter and its getting dark.

Corrosion on the grounds next to the headlights on the frame rails? Other than that check the switch and the plug behind it for voltage. Also check out “Foot to the Floor” there may be an article there in addition to Clark’s Garage. HTH

Another thing to consider is getting a relay circuit add-on for the headlights. Some are two relay setups. One for each headlight. The existing wires act as triggers for the voltage to the relay coils. Newer, heavier gauge wires are run to the headlights . You might also want to consider a similar rig for the fog lights. Those circuits are wired direct and will make a helluva mess if the circuit shorts like mine did. Bare conductors and a mess of plastic goo in a 50+ wire wiring harness. Still looking for a wiring tech for help to resolve this problem. HTH

What @Tiger03447 said. The design of the 944 puts all the power to the lights through the switch. As the switch and wiring gets older, the resistance goes up and lumens are seriously non-linear with voltage. A relay harness will help to fix all that.
That said, can you measure voltage at the plug to the lights?
Cheers

Hope that your headlight dilemma is soon brought to a close . You might also consider changing out the switch. (U Tube video) There are about 11 different wires that go into the plug behind the switch. Is your car an early or late car? Is your headlight switch rectangular or round? Some Later cars used a round switch. I am only familiar with the rectangular early switch. Use your WSM schematic to figure out what goes where. There are tiny numbers on the plug that correspond to the #’s on the schematic. Get out your optivisor..you’ll need it. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress…inquiring minds want to know..

Thank you all for the help
Thanks all, especially @Tiger03447. I made the mistake of taking it to a garage and they tried, but did not find anything. I had read the theory on clarks, but the suggestion from @Tiger03447 to look at Foot to the Floor helped to diagnose the problem as the switch. It appears bad, hopefully the only problem as a new one is on its way!
