Strange behaviour of the parking brakes
I just installed brand-new parking brake shoes (also, among others, new rotors), and experienced a problem during the adjustment:
I adjusted both sides (with the star nut) so that it turns barely on the second click of the parking brake lever, but the brake engages in a somehow irregular way. I had to spin the wheel (forward) a fraction of a turn in order for the (parking) brake to engage. The amount of this free spinning was random.
If I spun it backwards, it would (mostly) release, and it would again require this fraction of a turn spinning forward before engaging again.
Both sides bahave similar.
Keep in mind that on the third click, the parking brakes hold solid, so this seems to be OK.
Is this normal behaviour, or something is binding. The design of these parking brakes has many floating parts, so I wouldn't be surprised if this behaviour was normal. I know that this is not related to a problem with the drive axles, etc.

mine does something liek that. mine wont even hold it on a hill right now, probably needs shoes or adjustment.. but it works, but i do notice, if i forget its on, and i drive away, it will randomly lock up completly. sounds kindo f like what your saying.

it's interesting to see I'm not the only one to notice this.
But is it normal?
As the name says, an e-brake is supposed to be good for emergancy braking too, not only for parking, and this locking "feature" would make it hard to modulate the e-brake in emergency.
It's not a big deal for me, but this would be the first time in my life that I have a properly functioning e-brake, :-), and it would be a step in restoring my 944 to factory-like condition.

Mine does this as well, though it is much looser than yours. I've always thought it was goofy but not given it much thought.
If I don't apply full lever extension (max clicks) then it does NOT bind in that way.
