Z--I guess you can't generalize! By East I was thinking Millburn, Summit, Maplewood...etc. I'm bad at "where's your town"! Still a NYC boy at heart I guess.

David-- Hope you can adjust to the lack of beach/ocean views in NNJ!

Sounds like fun! After I get settled in, the search will start for the 951. I've heard that it's very difficult to get car insurance up there. I have State Farm now and they don't even write in NJ. I couldn't believe health insurance costs though. I have BCBS here, great coverage, dental $300. dedect. good health-$ $131.00 a month. Same company, same coverage, $1500 dedect. -$1476.00 a month! It sounds like I'm going to have to get at 200Kyr plus 300K annual divided checks just to stay above welfare!

I have a kid (Jenna, year and a half), so my trips to the Jersey Shore have been canceled indefinately! Cape May beaches are very nice (no medical waste--well, not much at least)! 45 minute drive at least though.

As for insurance, if you have been insured for more than 3 years, and have a clean driving record, try Allstate. I am paying $900 a year for the 944 with full coverage.

Good luck. NJ has some of the WORST insurance rates--if you have a spotty driving record, or are a young driver (not sure how old you are David). If you don't fall into the "high risk" catagory, you should be fine rate-wise. Another thing...in NJ, you should go through an Allstate local insurance broker. Check the Allstate website.

Actually, I have State Farm myself, a couple years ago I heard they weren't writing any new business in order to leave the state, a year ago they were no longer pulling out of NJ, guess they're still holding off on the new policies. I've been boating in NJ for a LOOONNNG time, The med waste has been a non-issue for the most part since NY stopped dumping trash into the water, only a couple isolated incidents in the past decade so other than the occasional occurence I'd put NJ's beaches up against the best of 'em.
Andy, get it straight, we don't have "some of the worst insurance rates," they are the worst, period! Sometimes it ain't so great to be #1...
I'll be 40 next week and I pay what most of the 16-18 year olds on this forum pay (granted it's for a LOT more coverage)!

Regarding insurance: get your company to join up with New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance company (NJM). Only employees of companies that use NJM are eligible for personal insurance. Since you are the boss, so to speak, you shouldn't have a problem getting the board to decide what insurance to use!

I have NJM, and pay around $1500.00 per year for three cars (89 944S2, 91 Subaru SVX, 95 Subaru Legacy) full coverage including collision. I do not know of any NJ insurance that offers such a good rate.

Oh, and I'm about 45 minutes north of Bridgewater. I have a garage full of modest tools watiing to be used! (Air gun, engine lift...etc).

Welcome to NJ!
-Z-man.

PS: Why do the trees in PA lean toward the east? 'Cause Jersey SUCKS! (You'll be hearing many more NJ jokes soon...)

Congrats, Dave! My bud is turning 40 next week too (May 11). I'll be 40 next year...can't wait (not)! Why the expensive insurance--tickets, or just silly $5 deductible?

I wouldn't! Been to Hawaii (the best of 'em) and the Jersey shore (that's what we call the beaches here) just doesn't cut it! I've vacationed in VA Beach a few times, and those beaches are much better than ours. Sorry, but that's the reality. There are less and less syringes that get washed up on the shore, though.

Yeah, but doesn't that have something to do with your 'driving style?' and what the local authorities think about it?!?

Z-man, My 944 will put your tools to work! Actually not too bad, just needs t-belts/waterpump, slave/master cyl., powersteering rack rebuild-pass.side leak, and body/paint. The interior I'm redoing as design/sewn goods is what I do(ice hockey equipment mfg.) Keeping my eyes open for a set of neglected sport seats.

Dave, yeah, State Farm still isn't writing any new biz. At least having you guys up there gives me something to look forward too!

Andy & Z, no violations that show on my inusrance , low deductable and big liability coverage. Actually, if you've checked some of the past insurance threads, Zoltan's $1500 isn't far off of most of those kids, I'm around $2k for the 944 and her '01 minivan.
I haven't tried Hawaii, but compared to Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard to the north and Santa Cruz on the far coast, I'll take NJ. For that matter, I wasn't really impressed with Saint Marten or some of the big name FL beaches but they do have an extended season. The only water I've checked out in VA is Chesapeke Bay (I've run the boat down a couple times to visit the folks), not exactly beaches and full of something the locals call nettles (nasty f-in jellyfish), don't go in the water in August!
