Default Early 944 brakes

A guy I know is willing to give me four sets of calipers (two left, two right for an early 944 in a parts swap along with some other stuff; anyone know if the front & rear calipers are the same? He claims they are, but I thought they were different part #s. I'd like to pick these up for a rebuild / beadblast & powdercoat job to spruce up the ride.

Different part numbers front and rear, and 83's had different front calipers than 84+. 84+ numbers:
Front: 944-351-4(29 or 30)
Rear: 944-352-4(29 or 30)

OK, I'll check and see what I end up with. . . I'm guessing to have a complete set of four for my early 85 I'd need

944-351-4-29
944-351-4-30
944-352-4-29
944-352-4-30

What is the difference between the 83' and the 84' front calipers? Do they require different pads than the 84'? Just curious due to I have both models.
TIA!

No idea, just got the numbers off of PET and 83's had different part numbers for the front, but the same for the rear.

It's possible that the '84 had brake pad wear sensors? I know the '83 did not.

Charlie,

The catalogs list 83-89 brake pads with the same number, so they're probably the same.

My PTRC shows the 83 has different front calipers. That part number is for the girling calipers IIRC as VW was using Girling. Some 83s had these calipers and it was the only year they were used. I think the calipers were leftovers from building the 924's The ATE calipers were used from then on and should bolt on.

Mine are ATE as well. The part numbers listed for the 83 are the same as the 77-82 924 so what we need is a 924 owner to confirm that the part number shown is a girling caliper.
