Default OEM interior rearview mirror mount questions

1. How best to remove the mirror from the glued-on windshield mount button disk without damaging the button or windshield?

2. Is the stock glued-on button disk good to mount an aftermarket mirror, or would an aftermarket mirror need a new button disk?

(My stock mirror flip-lever is broken, so I'd like to replace the mirror without removing the old button disk, if possible.)

I seem to recall the mirror slides off the button without much effort. I think I had to slide the mirror up. I remember because my mirror fell off the windshield and I glued the button back onto the windshield by itself.

You might need to change the button mount to a wedge mount. Use a heat gun to heat up the button mount on the inside and on the outside of the windshield. Then grab the mount with a big set of pliers and gently twist left and right. Be gentle and take your time, it will come off.
