Wood brake booster gasket?

Wood brake booster gasket?
I am currently replacing my brake booster and I noticed that there was a square gasket between the mounting plate and the booster. It is pretty hard and looks a little like wood. I am about to place an order for a new one from 944 online, but I just want to be sure that mine is old and is not normally supposed to be hard.
