Here's some labels on the 86+ engine bay just for future reference:
EDIT: Hmm...so yellow isn't the best color for the text labels....anyways you should be able to at least guess the names now.
Of most notable mention is the recall fuel line labeled in the bottom going from the fuel damper to the fuel rail.

That car's a 85.5???? That looks like (a butchered version of) the early fuel rail/line layout to me! Granted, not all of the changes between 85.1 and 85.5 were made at the same time but your car might be an 85.25 or something!

OOPS! I missed page 2!
To clarify; The changes made to the 944 for 85.5 were NOT made all at once, that is they did not stop production after x number of early '85 cars had been built and start making late '85 cars. The various changes were implemented as parts became available and there are a decent number of cars that are a mix of early and late parts. IIRC the first changes were the DME and control arms so there are "early '85s" out there with replaceable chips and non-replaceable ball joints! I've also heard of early interior cars with the electrical system of the later cars (DME under passenger floor, fuses/relays under hood), but I've never seen one, I would think that the electrical changes would have had to happen at the same time as the dash (to go with the harness change), the dash included the new ducting and I suspect that the windshield might have been part of that change.

My 85.5 had the late fuel rail. The first pic here is an early fuel rail and some sort of backwoods mod. Scootin's pic shows the recalled line quite nicely. And they dont cost zilch, I believe that hose is about 165 dollars.

From: Central Illinois. Cornfields a plenty.
Scootin's pic is also from an automatic..
Good luck on the recall- I checked and mine was done about 10 years ago- and the fuel rail sprung a leak last year, same place yours did- above the rear mounting bolt.
This is a common place for the braze to let go.
never trust old fuel lines.

Looking at my pictures, your picture and the pic of that really clean '86's bay, I'd have to agree with the person that stated it looks like an early fuel rail on a late style car. Your fuel hoses seem to come from the passenger side of the engine bay, where as mine are coming from the driver's side. It looks like they ran it as close as it'll get to the fuel rail, then they pieced together odds and ends to get it connected.

My 85.5 was built in 1/85 and it looks just like the layout in Rock's picture.
The racecar was built 4/85 and looks the same. What's the date on your engine? Maybe someone did a swap and pieced the fuel line together.

Looks like someone BUTCHERED that connection on the fuel rail!
I wonder if they didn't toss in an early model, when it calls for a later model?
I've already had to replace the whole fuel rail on my car...had to deal with blowing the fuel pressure regulator, it spitting at Legoland951 4' in the air, and us bending the metal pipe...OOOPS!
She's doing much better, just glad my boyfriend smelled gas...he doesn't want to drive my car again, hah! Said she spat at him.
