Source for halogen reverse bulbs
I just ran across this web site. They have 50 watt halogen bulb kits with the adapters for $19.95 for two!

You might want to be a bit careful upgrading them too much. My dad has a nice melted reverse cover on his M3 from high watt reverse bulbs. I'm not really sure how he managed that one either.....his driveway is pretty short.

I'm using Ice Shark's 35w bulbs for all rear lights. My directional signal (left turn) doesn't return and I've had (after parking at work) the rear lights on for as much as an hour and a half before turning them off.
No Problems with melt-down so far.
