Default Exhuast question

Ok so today i went to my local muffler shop and talked to the guy and he reccommended a dynomax muffler and 2.5 system instead of my curent 2.25, he said he could do a dynomax ultra flow muffler and piping 2.50 (aluminized) for about 200. What do you guys think about dynomax and widining up the exhuast sytem?

Some on this board will undoubtly say "Why mess with a good thing", or "The Porsche Engineers knew what they were doing", or "This engine is already optimized so extras like that are a waste of money." I don't have any experience with Dynomax and I haven't seen any objective dyno data, but reducing backpressure should free up some horsepower and will definitely change the exhaust note. I think it's just up to you and what you want. I got hold of a Flowmaster cat back system using the stock cat, and it sounds great, although it is definitely not conduscive to in-car conversations with the sunroof removed or the windows down. I don't know if it improved performace but it feels like it didi and it makes the car fun to drive. I can't belive that the amount of sound muffling the stock system did, didn't limit performance to some extent, so again it comes down to what you're looking for. I'd compare prices on a Bursch, Flowmaster, and Dynomax, and see if you can compare specs. If you're expectations are reasonable you won't be disappointed.

NO DONT GO DYNOMAX! They shed fiberglass like my bengal cat sheds in the summer!!!!! I'd choose Magnaflow anyday over Dynomax. I used to have a Dynomax on my old burgundy one, I hated it and it whistled!

i change regularly between flowmaster and stock exhaust setups. i find the flowmaster to be a nice sounding exhaust system, but it saps the low end. that doesnt really matter to me because i'm either cruisin or at the high end of the rev band. that said, i really noticed a big low-end punch increase when i reinstalled the stock system after having the flowmaster on for a few months.

YMMV, but i like the stock system, and will probably use it for my next DE and comare results from the previous time at roebling.

I hate the Dynomax on my 924...total crap, lasted for a year and a half and I'm looking to change it now too.

I think it depends on which model of muffler you're comparing, too.

Both Flowmaster and Walker (Dynomax) have different models in different price ranges.

I've had both; they both worked OK and neither failed prematurely.

I'm new to the list and to 944s, I just bought an 88 951 and it has a Bursh cat eliminator on it but the stock rusty muffler. I looked at Lindsey racing's exhaust and I was wondering what the Flowmaster sounds like (not buzzy/ricey). What muffler sounds good?

The only real exhaust for a 944 is the Speed Force Racing cat-back. Everything else is just so dull in comparison!

I guess the SFR looks pretty...but how many people are gonna lift up my car and look underneath it?! I have never felt it worthwhile to spring for a shiny SS system, and it's certainly not req'd in my So Cal climate. Aluminized tubing works just fine.

Any 2.5-3" mandrel-bent system will work imho. Mufflers are mufflers more or less, dep on style and construction. Same thing with tubing.
