Default 944s t-belt on 8v turbo

while poking around in another forum I ran across this:

Is The 944S Timing Belt Superior?
(33 views) (40 thread views)_

Message:
I was told the 944S/S2 timing belt is much better for the 944 8v and turbos, due to being wider and better constructed. The wider "S" belt fits more snugly in the camshaft and crankshaft gears, eliminating the side-to-side "walk" play found in the narrower belts, while the cam and crank drives rotate. Also, it has to drive the mass of a second camshaft, via the central chain of the 16v. If used in the 8v application, I was informed that the cam belt life is increased by an additional 10,000 miles.

Before I spend the extra money on a 16v "S" cam belt(or, take any unecessary risks), a second opinion or more is appreciated. Any additional thoughts on this guys? To me- it makes perfect sense...

Message:
I spoke to my parts guru in Germany again yesterday, and he said alot of 944s there run them, with "very positive" results. Aside from being 3mm wider, he said the Kevlar-reinforced belt has a higher resiliency urethane compound sandwiched on to the belt, because of the "s" model engine's higher thermal loading. He also added the belt is 30% stronger, simply because the extra durability is required to drive the mass of two camshafts.

One caveat- he said the belt is only ideal on the 1987-1989 8v and turbos, because the spring-loaded tensioner has a wider roller, that accomodates the wider belt, without wearing the outer edges. Models with eccentric tensioners(1983-1986) have rollers that are a hair too narrow, but COULD be used with some modification. I have a "mule" motor to test this on and I will see if the belt life is 10k better myself. I'll keep everyone posted....

So is this true? Has anyone tried it? I'm about to tackle my tbelt waterpump next weekend after I get back from Hershey, so I'd like to be as thorough as possible.

My sources only list one belt, IIRC the S belt has superseded the narrow belt for all other models.

I know for a fact I use an "S" belt and I change mine every 30,000 miles.

I'm with Dave, the S belt was superseded.

paragon lists the belts for the 944S/944S2/968 separately from the 8V timing belts which actually cost 2 bucks more. ? ? ? ?

i'm very curious about this belt issue as well.

do you need to make modifications, or different rollers, to use this belt?
