My 944S just spun a rod bearing (126K on the engine) and I'm just trying to decide whether to rebuild the engine as is to make it track-ready in the future; or install an S2 or 968 engine. I'm totally undecided, and probably won't decide for a while. Just curious what you guys think.
I already have over $11,000 into the car (including purchase price, head repair last year, pump/belts/motor mounts, upgraded suspension, and various other stuff). So it's difficult to say "just sell it and take your losses"

Go with the 3.0L engine ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Since you already have so much in the car it would suck to just sell it, especially without a running motor you'll get hardly anything. Dropping in a new motor probably won't end up costing you much more than rebuilding your S motor, and with an S2 or 968 powerplant in there they're less fragile engines, and they make more power! It'll be like supercharging your S for probably less money. See what you can find for motors and what it'll cost you for each option, then decide.

I say do the 968 swap. You're already in deep, may as well go all the way.
Plus the more people on here who have done the swap, the better for us (who want to do the same thing later) because we will have "vets" that we can pick the brains of............

Just rebuild. The cost of a rebuild versus the cost of a used S2 or 968 engine is going to be much lower. Besides, you don't know the condition of the "new" S2 or 968 engine, and you might be getting one that's just about to leave you in the same condition.

Dal - true. i've thought about the same thing myself
944_S_type - the bearing was making noise but i towed the car home before the engine gave up, so I believe that all the valves and head are intact.
