Default SOLO racing

I'm considering getting into solo racing like the format used by the SCCA. Locally in SW Fla. there is a chapter for the SCCA and PCA. My question is which club would be better for a weekend warrioir, who isn't looking to do anything more than run some laps and BS about cars.

thanks Greg

PCA is a mix of serious and casual drivers, SCCA is usually serious competition. PCA is probably more fun for the beginner.

I think that generally the PCA guys care more about their cars and the SCCA guys care more about competing. To me this suggests that a PCA event is safer because PCA members are less likely to take chances than the SCCA members. So I would get started with PCA.

Also PCA membership is half the cost of SCCA membership and the event costs are often lower as well.

Depends on what you are looking for. Solo 2 they both do, to my knowledge, PCA doesn't hold Solo 1/time trial events (or none that I got an invite for as a PCA member).

depends where you are. but, my guess is that SCCA will have about 500% more events per year

Go to both! I attend both SCCA and PCA events in my area. The SCCA events are usually a mix of some very good drivers and weekend warriors. The 944's are, in my opinon, very un-evenly matched in the stock SCCA classes (could just be me though). The advantage to the SCCA events is that they are usually only $15-$20 and the tracks tend to be very different from event to event. The downside to SCCA events, at least in my area, is that you only get 3 timed runs and they tend to be a little on the sloppy side as far as getting things going on time. On the other hand our local PCA chapter puts on some amazing events. For $40 you get somewhere between 8-12 laps depending on the conditions, everything is extremely prompt and organized, and you are competing in some very competitve classes. The instruction at the PCA events seems to be a little better than at the SCCA and you get to meet some great people. So try to go to them both and see which you like. Neither of the clubs are high pressure, if you show up thats fine, if you dont, no problem. The hardest part is getting out of bed in the morning.
