Just joined Rennlist, and enjoyed this download very much. The circuit used (Croft) is my local and it's great to see it being put to good use.

I've been lucky enough to sit in with Tiff on an exhibition lap around Silverstone in an M3, but I have to say I'm surprised by his lap time around Croft in the GT3. I don't think the lap was edited, and he did it in around 1min 50s. A competent driver can do that in a 944S2....

RWDKurt,
I think Tiff was playing it up some for the camera. If he was really driving ***** to the wall, I don't think he would be looking up at a helicopter and looking at the camera and talking. Keep in mind he raced F1 so I'm sure he can drive the GT3 waaaay past the limits of of mere mortals.

The video makes me want to sell the house and live in a box so that I can afford a GT3. Who needs showers anyway?

RWDKurt,
That must have been an awsome expierence getting to race with Tiff on that track. If you don't mind me asking how did you end up in that position? Welcome to the board, a very worthy first post I might add. If you look closely it seems as if when they flash to the helecopter view it overlaps for a second or so which might contribute to the higher lap time.

This reminds me very much of the Countach versus Chopper in Motor Trend back in the 80s. Racing against Bob Bondurant (of racing and racing school fame) in his black and gold Gazelle helicopter.

Problem is that the helicopter is allowed to skid off the corners and not to follow the track specifically, so it's basically all for fun.

BTW, from the way the video looks there was probably one serious race and then lots of laps getting cool shots and Tiff's commentary. Copter goes from in front to behind from one shot to the next with no real time for it to have slipped back there that quickly. They probably also don't have that many cameras and chase vehicles setup for cost reasons to film this little race.

Great lil video though......

Thanks for the welcome Andrew. My hot lap alongside Tiff was a prize in a competition! One of these where there were several winners and we each took it in turns. It was round the full GP circuit at Silverstone in a road car - an e36 M3 with slushbox, and he wasn't driving for a quick time. He spent much of the lap trying to go sideways and cursing the (lack of) speed of the transmission shifts...

I'm under no illusion about his driving skills - in his hands I reckon the GT3 would lap Croft in around 1min 40sec if driven properly, so either there was some discreet editing or he was hamming it up big style. He was certainly very sideways through the Complex, which is near the end of the lap.

I've done many trackdays at Croft, and my best time is around 1min 42s in a V8 kitcar (250bhp and 600kg) on road tyres. One of my fellow enthusiasts was driving the S2 and was doing 1min 50s all day long. The S2 great track/road car and the reason I joined Rennlist - I'm in the market for one in the next few months .

Cheers

Kurt

Kurt,
Sounds like a fun time. What a great prize!! What kind of a competion? Was it driving related? Do you currently race? You stumbled across a great board, if you ever have any questions about your future car these guys know more about 944/951's than any mortal should. Be sure to keep us updated on the buying process and post pictures when you do.

Robert,
I could not get the Top Gear - The Best Of 01.25.2004 video to work. It seemed to download in zip format but when I tried to extract it it said "does not appear to be a valid archive". Is there some trick to It? Thanks I am looking forward to seeing it.
