Default Location for switched power

For those who have put in aftermarket electrical oil temp/water temp/etc. , where did you tap into for switched 12V power?

Thanks
Mike

I'm doing the same thing Mike. Looks like most guys go with power from the clock or radio. I've pulled out the cubby hole and there is a nice nest of wires there. I should be able to find what I need there.

From Danno's RacerX ARM install he has instructions on accessing power and lighting from the clock.
Hooking Up the Power Wiring
As luck would have it, the wiring going to the clock contains all the ignition-on power, ground and night-lighting signals we need to hook up the ARM1. This is how they line up:

Clock Harness ARM1
green --> ON power <-- red
brown --> ground <-- black
grey --> dash lights <-- white

I ended up cutting these wires 3" from the back of the ARM1 and soldering it to the PC board cut out of the clock. This allowed the unit to be plugged straight into the car's wiring harness without cutting, soldering or crimping.

We would need switched power though, isn't the clock always on and therefore constant 12V?

You can also tap into the DME harness. The switched 12v power-line is the red/yellow-stripe wire (either one).

As I remember, there seemed to be several locations of switched power under the dash of my '83. One (connected to my radio) is even switched off the ignition switch key "door" (insert key - 12V power).

Since gauges don't pull a lot of current, you should be pretty safe on just about any point you choose. I personally wouldn't choose anything associated with the DME or other digital circuits, but even that probably won't cause any problems.
