There is a really large chamfer on one end. when I took it off this was the side that was on the stub axle where itsterts to widen to the base. Here's a bettter picture.

That's an inner race. Chamfer was in the correct location against the CV mounting flange. If this is turned the other way or if the outer space is used here, the CV flange in pushed in and causes the CV's to track strange.

Interesting to see the two grooves from the seals. Must have been a lot of road grit in the cars history.

Luis, to answer you hijacking question, the front rotors are bolted to the hubs which must be removed to replace the rotors. Its a good time to replace the hub seals and repack the bearings.

If these are hard to get off, you're in trouble.

Did I blow that answer? Was asking about the calipers right? Not the rotors.

ok. Here's another one. Couldn't get rear left rotor off. Thought the emergency brake was open too much and tried to adjust it. Nothing.... Then took axle nut off (no problem with my new 500 ft-lb of torque impact wrench). Anyway, the rotor and hub came right off. Can't seem to separate rotor and hub though. Any ideas?

Are the VW spacers the same as the ones I need? Looks like there is a tiny VW stamped on one edge of the outer spacer.

Remove the one or two philips head counter sunk screws.

Can't find part anywhere. Even mail order places have to order it. The good nes is that my inner race was broken so I am hoping that that was the thumping problem.

The inner race to the roller bearing or the ball bearing?

If it was the roller bearing then yes that was your thumping. Replace the stub axle as it's worn from the damaged race and a new bearing will not last long before it breaks too.

Race was broken to the outer bearing which if i recall is the roller bearing. Although the axle nut was still tight.

Also while I'm here. What is the best way to get the stub axle back in?

Put the new ball bearing in from the back then the snap ring. Install the seal. Don't bend the seal when you install it! Seal should be at least flush with the training arm housing if not seated all the way.

Put the new inner spacer on the axle and slip the axle in from the inside.

Holding the axle in place from the inside slide the long spacer on.

Slide the roller bearing into the recess for it from the outside.

Slide the inner race for the roller bearing on to the stub axle making sure it lines up with the roller bearing.

Put the o-ring over the flange and bolt the backing plate back on. Don't pinch and cut the o-ring.

Put the new seal into the backing plate.

Slide the outer spacer on with the outside chamfer going in toward the roller bearing.

Install hub and nut.

Torque to 350 ft. lbs.

With an impact gun I would run the nut tight, look at the location for the cotter pin through holes then hammer the nut till the next set lines up.

Install cotter key.

Install rotor/parking brake drum.

Install the philips flat head screws and tighten.

Just wondering.. Do all these parts go back on easier than they came off?

Also wondering which side of the roller bearing is chamfered? Both sides look the same as far as I can tell. Here are two pictures. (one with fingers and one without.) Can anyone see a difference? Both sides look the same to me.

Here's one side.
