Default Is my gas cap faulty?

I filled up my gas tank on monday (the first day i got it on the road)... and i filled it all the way. I didn't top it off, but i just went until the pump clicked. I put the cap on until it clicked, and drove off. The car had been freshly washed. I did a fast run down a real windy road, and smelled gas. I was worried that the pipe my dad had "made" to go from the fuel pump to the fuel filter, wasn't holding up. But wheni got out, i found that gas had come out of the cap because of a streak down the rear fender behind the wheel. It hasn't done that since the car was filled, buti was wondering if that is something others have experienced? or do i need a new cap?

Thanks

If you look closely, you'll notice that the cap has an O-ring seal that can be replaced. Many folks have had to replace it already in order to pass emissions. I believe you can find a generic replacement at a hardware store instead of getting it from the dealer.

You can get a locking gas cap at NAPA for <$13, I think.

I really didn't notice how poorly my old cap sealed until I put in the new one.
