Default belts squealing (i think)

so ya whenever i start up my car after not having driven it for maybe longer than id say 6 hours...for the first 15 seconds or so i hear squealing noise and the volt meter maxes out on the dash...then it goes back to normal...also...if i drive prety hard and take it to the redline it starts to do the same thing...any ideas on what may be wrong? i just had the drivebelts replaced but the problem existed before i changed it...might it be the alternator?

thanks.

It may just be that whoever installed the accessory belt didn't tighten it enough -- or loosened afterwards. IIRC, the tension is supposed to be 5mm of deflection.

I don't understand the voltage meter pegging out, though. The voltage regulator is supposed to stop this. But the first thing is to make sure the belt is properly tensioned.

My guess: Replace the voltage regulator in the alternator. It is cheap and rather easy to do.
